Young Historians Conference. The Challenge Program and the PSU History Department hosted the 19th Annual Oregon Society for Student Historians Conference at Portland State University April 15. This was an exciting event with over 200 students attending from high schools offering PSU History courses through the Challenge Program. Schools included Clackamas, Grant, Lakeridge, Sunset, and St. Mary's Academy.

Thirty-eight of these students presented their research papers to their peers in panels organized by theme, with a Faculty Commentator providing feedback. Subjects ranged from the impact of Alan Ginsberg's Howl and a dissection of the Bhagavad Gita to Jane Adams and Hull House. Commentators will choose a best paper from their panel, from which an overall best paper will be chosen. The winning Young Historian will be announced by May 1.

The Conference is a powerful and authentic experience for students of history, celebrating their scholarship and providing a professional forum for dialog and feedback.

Welcome to PSU Challenge & LINK Online

Welcome to the online portal to the Challenge and LINK Programs at Portland State University. Challenge and LINK are two programs for high school students to take PSU college courses, administered through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students accepted into the LINK Program receive a tuition remission of $150 per quarter.

In addition, this site serves as a general reference point for high school opportunities through PSU.  Look here too for postings of special events and activities of particular interest to high school students.

LINK students new to PSU apply to the University as Quick Entry (part-time) students and then pre-register for their coursework through LINK. They are restricted, as are all Quick Entry students, to a maximum of 8 credits (typically 2 courses) per quarter.

Important information about taking college courses

  • Make sure you are sufficiently ready and prepared. College coursework is more rigorous than that in high school and the grade you receive will be part of your permanent college record. You need to work with your counselor to determine a study plan that best fits your own needs and requirements.
  • Federal laws governing colleges and student privacy PREVENT us from discussing your coursework with anyone but you, unless you give written consent. If you are a parent, please make a special note of this.
